What is a remedial massage?
Remedial massage therapy is a clinical approach that aims to locate the original cause of disorders, and aid soft tissue repair or dysfunction. The treatment includes initial consultation about your health and lifestyle, and an assessment - postural analysis, range of movement testing and orthopaedic testing if required - followed by the actual treatment that will focus on the dysfunction. A number of different techniques might be used to aid the repair of damaged areas of the body. The pressure applied in this healing treatment can either be strong and deep or gentle and shallow, depending on the problem, to speed up the body's own healing process of the disorder as well as the symptoms.

How often should I have a remedial massage?
Remedial massage is used to treat both acute and chronic conditions. With acute conditions, remedial massage is usually indicated 72 hours following the injury. As each body is different, we offer individually tailored treatment plans for more chronic conditions depending on your goals. A maintenance massage every 2 -4 weeks will prevent chronic conditions from worsening, and optimise function.
What should I expect during my first visit?
If this is your first visit, please arrive 5 to 10 minutes prior to your appointment time. On arrival, you will be asked to fill out a health history form. It is important to list all your medical conditions, health concerns or allergies so the therapist can tailor the treatment to suit you. You may also ask your therapist any questions you have.

Your therapist will then show you where things are and leave the room for you to undress and get comfortable on the massage table under a towel. She will return to start the treatment when you are ready.

During the massage, please feel free to tell us if you want anything changed such as the pressure, areas being worked on, areas to be avoided, if you feel too cold or too hot. Remember, Kneading Hands is a safe space for you to completely release, relax and unwind, so it is all about making you feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible.

After the treatment, your therapist will leave the room to give you privacy to get dressed and return when you are ready.

What do I wear during my massage session?
For a full body massage, most get undressed down to their underwear, but you should only undress to the level you are comfortable. However, you will get a better massage if you take most of your clothing off. All areas that are not being massaged during the treatment will be well draped with a towel to ensure your modesty.

How long will my massage appointment take?
Kneading Hands offers 30-, 45-, 60- and 90-minute massage treatments. A full body massage is 60 minutes, and we recommend it if this is your first relaxation treatment with us. All initial treatments for remedial massage are between 60 to 75 minutes to allow time for consultation, assessment and treatment.

What do I do during my treatment?
Make yourself as comfortable as possible. And breathe. When you focus on deep breathing, it will help you completely relax and unwind. Soft relaxing background music will also be played to help.

You may choose to close your eyes, or you may prefer to chat. Some start the treatment session chatting but drift off to sleep as they relax with the massage. Some unload their worries and stress. You do whatever makes you feel most comfortable.

It is important that you are always comfortable, so if you need something please let us know. If you would like to change anything such as the pressure, area being worked on, your position, or the temperature of the room then please advise the therapist.

Your therapist will check to make sure you are feeling ok throughout your session or ask you to adjust your position to work on a different area.

Will the massage be painful?
Therapeutic massage uses a light to medium pressure that doesn’t go deep into the muscles, you might feel a stronger pressure or slight soreness in those particularly tight areas, but it should never be painful. If you feel any pain or discomfort, you should inform your therapist immediately as it might be an indication of muscle inflammation.

What can I expect after my massage?
Most will be completely relaxed and recharged. Some might experience a decrease from long-term aches and pains and greater mobility, while others may need a few more treatments.

After your treatment, you should increase your water intake to help flush out any toxins and keep your body hydrated.

If you have received a strong massage or have not had a massage in a while, it is normal to experience a slight muscle soreness within 24 to 48 hours of the treatment. Just like muscles get used to a workout, your muscles are getting used to being manipulated in a massage.

Just like exercise, the benefits of massage increase with regular treatments.

When should I NOT get a massage?
If you are currently contagious from any condition or experiencing any of the following symptoms, please do not book a massage treatment.
-
fever
-
cold / flu symptoms (runny or stuffy nose)
-
cough
-
sore throat
-
